Hungry Monkey

Dr Seuss Quote

Reading Is Fun!!!

Remember trips to the school or community library as a child? Like most kids, were you hungry to get your hands on something interesting or exciting to read? Not much has changed with kids, they still get fired up about the enchantment of a story and exploring the wonders of our world through books. Sadly, rural Cambodia school libraries are few and far between, and if one exists there are minimal tattered books available. Bun Sarom and his wife, Yarin, established Hungry Monkey to change that. Sarom remembers going to his village school where there were no library books and Yarin, as a mother of two avid young readers knows the value of books. This initiative is a golden opportunity to nurture young Khmer learners, so that they may learn and grow and become the future leaders of tomorrow.

Hungry Monkey is a literacy fund established by Ecstatic Pizza Restaurants in Siem Reap, Cambodia. It is a non-profit, Khmer owned project that collects donations towards the purchase of primary school library books for selected libraries in Siem Reap Province. The libraries are identified with the help of partner NGO’s which work in the outlying areas of the province and are in a position to assess the need for children’s reading material in the schools from their area.

Who Are We?

The owners of Ecstatic Pizza Restaurants, Bun Sarom and Chey Yarin, along with their staff, volunteer their time to make the program work.  They collect donations, order books, keep records of titles sent out to schools and deliver the books once a month.

How It Works!

It’s actually pretty simple. At Ecstatic Pizza, there is a bookshelf with a selection of about 25 or 30 ‘Khmer language children’s books. Customers can choose to donate a book or several to the program by simply completing an order form available at the bookshelf and then pay us the amount of the order. For accountability and transparency purposes, they will receive a numbered receipt at the time of their donation. Each month an order of books corresponding to the donations will be purchased and delivered to a selected school library.  The Hungry Monkey Facebook Page and web page will be updated with the progress and activity of the program regularly.
